BASIC CONCEPTS OF BUDDHISM

Buddhism is followed by over 500 million people worldwide and is viewed as more than a religion, as a philosophy, ethical practice, spiritual development and way of life.

The word BUDDHISM comes from 'budhi' which means 'to awaken'

The Buddhist path is one which

·      encourages leading a moral life

·      Encourages being mindful and aware of thoughts and actions

·      develops wisdom and understanding.

·      Is a way of life that leads to true happiness.

·      explains a purpose to life

How Buddhism began

Siddhartha Gautama was born into a royal family in Lumbini, in Nepal, in 563 BC. At 29, he realized that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness, so he set off to seek knowledge, exploring different religions and philosophies, to find the answers to human happiness. After six years of study living in a cave, he set off to Bodhgaya and meditated under a Bodhi Tree, where he became ENLIGHTENED. He became known as THE BUDDHA– which means “awakened one”.

What he learned, 'the middle path' was what the Buddha spent the rest of his life teaching others - the principles of Buddhism — called the Dharma, or Truth — until his death at the age of 80.  The Buddha did not proclaim to be a God, he simply taught a path to enlightenment from his own experience. The Buddha’s first followers were wandering ascetics – they were homeless, had few possessions, and travelled around spreading the teachings by word of mouth. It was not until about 80 BCE, that the earliest texts, known as the Pāli Canon, were written down.

Different Types of Buddhism

There are many different types of Buddhism from country to country due to the specific customs and culture. What each has in common is the essence of the teaching -the truth.

Buddhism is also is tolerant of all other beliefs or religions but goes further by providing a long-term purpose within our existence, through wisdom and understanding. The Buddha taught many things, but asked his followers to test the teachings rather than accept his word as true. Buddhism depends more on understanding than faith.

BUDDHISM CONCEPTS

Very common in the Western world, a statue or image of the Buddha with hands rested gently in its lap and a compassionate smile reminds us to find peace and love within ourselves. Buddhists pay respect to images of the Buddha as an expression of gratitude for the teachings.

The basic concepts in Buddhism can be summed up as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS

The First Noble Truth

LIFE IS SUFFERING

- Life includes pain, getting old, disease, and ultimately death. We also endure psychological suffering like fear, loneliness frustration, disappointment and anger. This is a fact that cannot be denied. Buddhism explains how suffering can be avoided and how we can be truly happy.

The Second Noble Truth

SUFFERING IS CAUSED BY CRAVING AND AVERSION

-  We will suffer if we do not get what we want. When we need other people to conform to our expectations, if we want others to like us etc, we suffer! Rather than constantly struggling to get what you want, try to modify your wants and desires. Getting what you want does not guarantee happiness. Also, a lifetime of craving and wanting to continue to exist, creates a powerful energy which causes the individual to be reborn. So craving leads to physical suffering because it causes us to be reborn.

The Third Noble Truth

SUFFERING CAN BE OVERCOME AND TRUE HAPPINESS IS POSSIBLE.

- lf we give up craving and learn to live each day at a time (not in the past or the future) we can become happy and free. We then have more time and energy to help others. This is called Nirvana.

The Fourth Noble Truth

THE NOBLE 8-FOLD PATH IS WHAT LEADS TO THE END OF SUFFERING.

• THE NOBLE 8-FOLD PATH

In short, the Noble 8-fold Path is about living in a moral way - what we say, do to others and what we do as our livelihood. Its about focusing our minds on being fully aware of our thoughts and actions, being compassionate and developing greater wisdom by understanding the Four Noble Truths.

There are the 5 Precepts

The moral code within Buddhism is the precepts, of which the main five are:

1.     not to take the life of anything living

2.     not to take anything not freely given

3.     to abstain from sexual misconduct and sensual overindulgence

4.    to refrain from untrue speech

5.     to avoid intoxication, ie: losing mindfulness.

KARMA

Karma is the law that every cause has an effect, i.e., our actions have results. Karma underlines the importance of all individuals being responsible for their past and present action and determined by:

(1) the intention behind the action

(2) effects of the action on oneself

(3) the effects on others.

WISDOM

Buddhism teaches that wisdom should be developed with compassion. Buddhism uses the middle path to develop both. The highest wisdom is seeing that in reality, everything is IMPERMANENT, nothing lasts forever as a fixed thing. True wisdom is not just believing everything we are told, but instead experiencing and understanding truth and reality. Wisdom requires an open, objective, non judgmental mind. The Buddhist path requires courage, patience, flexibility and intelligence.

COMPASSION

Compassion includes qualities of sharing, readiness to give comfort, sympathy, concern, caring. In Buddhism, through wisdom, we can understand others, when we can really understand ourselves.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Buddhist teachings can be understood and tested by anyone. Buddhism teaches that the solutions to our problems are within ourselves not outside. ln this way, each person decides for themselves and takes responsibility for their own actions and understanding. This makes Buddhism less of a belief system to be accepted, but more of a teaching in which each person learns and uses in their own way.

Everyday you wake up, you are given a CHOICE.

Its the ULTIMATE RESET…

A brand new BEGINNING.

What happened yesterday was absorbed by your sleep. It was PUT TO REST. Buried.

As you awaken you get a DO-OVER.

However… here’s where the CONSCIOUS CHOOSING of your thoughts creates the SHAPE of your unfolding day. And what you do DAILY, the small actions, can add up to HABITS in your life…

How your life is NOW is a result of all your THOUGHTS, WORDS AND ACTIONS up until this point. Agreed?

Or not? Is it someone else’s fault you don't feel good. Something that happened to you?

That can be an absolute truth in your reality, what is real for you in this moment, but IN EACH MOMENT you are presented with a choice. Be victim of your circumstances or a creator of your circumstances.

This is not a positive thinking sanctimonious lecture, there’s enough of that all over social media.

Lets bring it into the topic of energy… something you ABSOLUTELY have control over your SELF.

YOU ARE AN ENERGETIC BEING. Everything around you is energy. Quantum physics proved that.

You interact and respond accordingly to the energy you immerse yourself in and subject yourself to.

How you cultivate energy within you and work with it is key.

Which brings us back to the topic of each brand new day and the subject of new beginnings.

I could -

WAKE up to the jarring sound of my phone alarm… and out of habit, reach for my phone and CONNECT TO ITS ENERGY which immediately transports me out of my INNER REALM of sleep, my dream state and my comfy safe warm bed….

CHECK MY MESSAGES and immediately, in my MOST VULNERABLE OPEN STATE OF BEING - open myself up to whatever communication anyone who has my number has shared with me… opening me up to messages that feel like ENEREGETIC PUKE. Messages that are spam, intruding into my life, messages needing responses to problems, schedule requests etc etc… that make us think, open us up to frustration, stress and confusion. Open us up to fear, hopelessness and  feelings of lack.

LOG ONTO THE NEWS.. see what's NEW - OUT THERE in the world of CHAOS, ACCIDENTS , NATURAL DISASTERS, POLITICAL UNREST, EVIL ACTS AND SENSATIONALISM. Stuff that makes news grab our ATTENTION..

Or SOCIAL MEDIA to see what EVERYONE ELSE, including total strangers and AI creations that are not ever REAL, are telling us about THEIR LIVES, which can result in subconscious feelings of COMPARISON, NOT BEING ENOUGH..LACK.. Hence the term the “Doom Scroll”

AND ALL THIS IN THE FIRST 5 MINUTES OF A BRAND NEW DAY!!! ???

What did people do before the MAGIC RECTANGLE came along to SHAPE our futures???

(We got up and read the news papers! Or turned on the tv news)

Now, that’s an EXTERNAL energy exchange.. but what about the INTERNAL energy exchange that can happen first thing upon waking.

Maybe your sleep was sparse…

You are hungover, hormonal, needed to pee, ate a heavy late meal, maybe your dreams were unsettling, racing thoughts disrupted your rest…

Your NERVOUS SYSTEM,  your ANTENNA to the outside world overloaded. Your physical body unable to PLUG IN and recharge.

So how can we start our days differently? Cultivate the energy we need for each day?

BEFORE THE LIGHT COMES DARKNESS. ENERGY can create and it can destroy. There is DUALITY, opposite sides to everything in our lives. So you could try to do some things differently. First become aware of all your patterns both morning and night.

You could-

·      Begin each day by preparing the night before. Don’t eat or drink too late. Use water to WASH OFF THE ENERGY of the day by showering or use minerals like MAGNESIUM in your bath which helps sleep.

·      You could think about how you want the next day to look.

·      Before you sleep, in those last few minutes, tell your body what’s going to happen in sleep. Program it.. its going to repair, digest and re-energize while you are sleeping. You could tell your mind how you are going to awaken refreshed and energized.

In the morning…as you BEGIN a brand new day…

You could -

·      Set your alarm earlier than normal to be a song, a piece of music that is gentle, or makes you happy.

·      Keep the phone in a different place not immediately within arms reach. If more drastic measures are needed, get a phone lockbox!!

·      Awaken and put your hand on your heart to plug in and connect to yourself.

·      Recognize I WOKE UP TODAY. ie: I am not dead. Holy shit, that’s a pretty good start to ANY day… after that, its all gravy / bullshit is it not???

·      STAY THERE in that feeling… grateful you woke up and GETTING ANOTHER DO-OVER at life just by waking up.

This is creating, igniting, SPARKING an energy which feels GOOD. LIGHT, BRIGHT & has a POSITIVE CHARGE.  Start your morning routine without your phone if possible, just for the first 5 MINUTES!

The Key is to WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS which are shaped and directed by WHAT YOU ALLOW IN FIRST THING…

Don’t answer calls, check emails and texts.. do not allow any external thing or person to decide the DIRECTION, the FLOW of your energy.

You could SHAPE your FEELINGS first thing with some carefully chosen actions and thoughts.

·      Affirmations for example.

·      A few minutes of meditation.

·      Reading a book, or journalling for a few minutes with your coffee or tea.. (but bear in mind, caffeine is like a De-Fib that will BLAST your mind and body into your day…maybe you need that.. but take note of its affect upon your energy and how long it lasts)

·      Move your body and allow your body to awaken naturally.

·      Leave your phone and connect with nature.

PROTECT YOUR ENERGY in the first 5 mins of your day and you are now connecting to a stream of energy that will feel NATURAL, feel PEACEFUL and CONNECTIVE.

You logged on to your wifi INTERNALLY, established the connection and now things can flow!  Now you can be around others, receive messages and images, and words living in the world right here, right now.

But now you have established an ENERGETIC BOUNDARY around your nervous system! You have a screensaver, You are CHARGED, PLUGGED IN… connected to the MOTHERBOARD. The source.

There is NO GREATER ENERGY to plug into than the SOURCE.. of you..of everything in existence.. what came before and what will continue after.

Try it, change some things and use how you FEEL as your guide. Turn the volume up or down.. see what works for you each new day. Daily actions become habits, which shape the direction of your days and ultimately your life path.

This week’s full moon takes place early Thursday morning, October 17th, so you can run and hide or take a deep breath and get ready for battle! Known as the Hunter Moon, it takes place in the astrological sign of ARIES – reflected in the WARRIOR archetype, with FIERCE energy – so use it to find your courage, own your power & stand up for yourself. It’s an invitation to be brave and to face your darkness so you can fight your way back into the LIGHT!

Aries full moons fill you with energy and passion, and the focus should be fully on you. Aries is about “me / the SELF ” and in particular, relationship dynamics come into focus, so it’s a good time to face your emotional wants / needs / desires in all your relationships. TENSION and FEELINGS may rise to the surface, and if you feel a little stuck, use this moon’s energy to face it ALL!

What is it you want? Start to pursue it at last, be bold, and set boundaries if you need to.

Get real, get brave and you will get greater awareness and clarity in all your connections.

Full Moon’s are great opportunities to bring situations in your life to a natural conclusion, so it may be time to turn some things around, to let go of what’s no longer working for you.

Astrologically, this period brings potential for emotional breakthroughs. Your shadow may come up front and center, so be careful of making fear based decisions. Aries energy is impulsive and bull headed, so be wary of taking action when feeling triggered, insecure, frustrated or jealous.. it probably won’t end well!!! Give your energy an outlet…exercise, yell out loud, shake it out and then get into water – dip your feet into the ocean, lake, pool, take a shower or bath!

This full moon brings you back to the Aries full moon in April, so it may bring up similar themes from 6 months ago! Have a think about what was happening then..what you faced! Reflect on your progress, give yourself credit for any growth your experienced and be open to new possibilities and ways of looking at things.

Above all, be gentle with yourself, surrender and TRUST THE PROCESS as always!
